What Is Equine Assisted Learning (EAL)
Learning Life Skills Through the Wisdom of Horses
At Helping Thru Horses, we believe that horses have a unique ability to help people discover their strengths, overcome challenges, build confidence, and develop healthier relationships.
Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) is an experiential learning approach that uses structured interactions with horses to promote personal growth, emotional awareness, communication skills, leadership development, confidence, problem-solving, and relationship-building. Unlike traditional counseling or psychotherapy, EAL focuses on learning through experience and guided activities with horses. Participants do not need prior horse experience to benefit.
According to the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.), Equine Assisted Learning is a recognized equine-assisted service in which qualified professionals use horse-human interactions to facilitate learning and personal development. EAL is considered a non-therapy service that focuses on educational and developmental outcomes.
Why Horses?
Horses are highly sensitive animals that naturally respond to human behavior, emotions, body language, confidence, and leadership. Because horses live in the present moment and communicate primarily through non-verbal cues, they provide immediate and honest feedback.
Participants often discover that horses respond differently when they:
Communicate clearly
Demonstrate confidence
Establish healthy boundaries
Manage emotions effectively
Practice patience and consistency
Develop trust and leadership skills
These lessons frequently transfer into everyday life, helping participants improve relationships, work performance, school success, emotional regulation, and self-confidence.
What Happens During a Session?
Helping Thru Horses specializes in ground-based, non-riding Equine Assisted Learning experiences with Buddy and Sissy. We do offer limited introduction to riding for those who wish to participate.
Participants may engage in activities such as:
Grooming and horse care
Leading exercises
Obstacle and teamwork challenges
Communication exercises
Trust-building activities
Problem-solving tasks
Goal-setting exercises
Observation and reflection activities
Basic riding commands and use of equipment
Each activity is designed to create meaningful learning opportunities while ensuring a safe and positive experience for both horses and participants. No riding experience is required.
The Science Behind Equine Assisted Learning
Research in Equine Assisted Services continues to grow. Studies have reported improvements in:
Confidence and self-esteem
Emotional regulation
Anxiety reduction
Social interaction skills
Communication abilities
Resilience
Quality of life
Interpersonal relationships
A 2023 review of Equine Assisted Services research found evidence supporting improvements in resilience, anxiety, depression symptoms, interpersonal interactions, and overall well-being among participants.
Research involving children and adolescents has demonstrated reductions in anxiety and stress while participating in structured equine-assisted programs.
For individuals with autism spectrum disorders, multiple studies have found improvements in social communication, social cognition, and behavioral functioning through equine-assisted activities.
While every individual is unique and outcomes vary, the growing body of evidence supports the positive role that horses can play in personal growth, learning, and emotional wellness.
Real-Life Examples
Case Study #1 – Teen With Social Anxiety
A teenage participant struggled with social confidence and communication. During a leading exercise, the horse repeatedly stopped and refused to move forward. Through coaching and observation, the participant learned that uncertainty and hesitation were affecting their communication with the horse.
After several sessions, the participant developed stronger leadership skills, improved confidence, and reported feeling more comfortable interacting with peers at school.
Case Study #2 – Adult Experiencing Life Transition
An adult facing career burnout participated in a series of Equine Assisted Learning sessions focused on goal-setting and personal reflection.
Through obstacle challenges with the horses, the participant identified patterns of self-doubt and overthinking. By practicing clear communication and leadership with the horse, the participant developed greater confidence in decision-making and ultimately pursued a new career direction.
Case Study #3 – Child With Autism
A young participant with autism initially struggled with engagement and eye contact. Through consistent interaction with the horses, the child gradually developed greater confidence, increased communication, and stronger emotional connection.
The horse provided a calm, non-judgmental learning partner that helped create a safe environment for growth and success

Why Helping Thru Horses?
More Than 10 Years of Equine Assisted Learning Experience
Helping Thru Horses is not a large corporate program. We intentionally remain small and personal so that each participant receives individualized attention.
Founder and Executive Director Troy Freeman has spent more than a decade facilitating Equine Assisted Learning experiences and developing meaningful human-horse connections that help people build confidence, improve relationships, and discover new possibilities.
Our program is built around the unique partnership of Buddy and Sissy, two remarkable rescue horses whose calm personalities, intelligence, and intuitive nature have helped hundreds of individuals experience growth, healing, learning, and hope.
Meet Buddy & Sissy
Buddy is a gentle, experienced gelding known for his calm temperament, patience, and ability to help participants feel comfortable and successful.
Sissy, Buddy's younger sister, is highly intelligent, engaging, and interactive. Her curiosity and responsiveness often help participants develop communication, focus, and confidence.
Together, Buddy and Sissy create a powerful learning environment that encourages personal growth in a safe and supportive setting.
